Best Mattress For Heavy People

Some mattresses are specifically designed for plus-size sleepers. From construction to firmness level, there are plenty of features to make a mattress more comfortable. Of course, not every mattress is made the same, which is why we rounded up the best mattresses for plus-sized individuals.

We looked for mattresses that are supportive, avoid overheating, don’t soften over time and have good edge support. While individual factors like body type and body weight will affect how a mattress feels, the mattresses on our list are specially designed to be supportive for people who weigh more than 230 pounds.

To find the best mattresses for heavy people, we analyzed data on more than 650 mattress options and ranked them in terms of price, firmness, type, their try-and-return policies and more. See which mattresses made the list.

Note: This ranking focuses exclusively on queen size mattresses. Prices are accurate as of the publication date, and availability of mattresses are subject to change.

What’s Different About a Mattress for Heavy People?

For our rankings, we picked high-scoring hybrid or latex mattresses with a firmness of at least 7 and memory foam mattresses with a firmness of at least 8. This is because heavier individuals are more likely to need firmer mattresses due to how weight is applied.

The more weight that is applied to the surface of a mattress, the more the mattress may sink. This can cause a feeling of drooping or sagging that may feel the opposite of supportive.

Who Should Buy a Mattress for Heavy People?

On average, sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds will likely need to choose a mattress that takes their weight into consideration. Thicker mattresses may offer more support; however, a mattress’ thickness doesn’t always guarantee comfort. Thicker mattresses with many layers of memory foam, for example, will need additional padding to make the foam or memory gel feel less heat conductive.

Most mattresses designed for heavier sleepers will fall into the medium firm to firm category.

What to Consider When Buying a Mattress for Heavy People

Sleepers concerned about whether or not a mattress will support their weight should start by first checking out the weight capacity of the mattresses they are considering. Most manufacturers will reveal how much a mattress is designed to support, which is a factor to consider if you are planning on sleeping with a partner in the same bed as well.

Although foam mattresses do tend to give a “sinking” feeling for many heavier sleepers, there are simple ways to check if a memory foam or gel-based mattress will provide the support you need. Look for higher-density foams and thick coils. You can also opt for hybrid mattress models that contain more durable coils and hybrid foams. These can be more supportive and durable for sleepers, regardless of their preferred sleeping position.
