Puffy Mattress Review

Should you consider purchasing one of the three Puffy mattresses? This review will help you decide if a Puffy, and which model, is right for you.

Puffy at a Glance

Living up to its name, the Puffy mattress brand caters to those seeking a soft, cloud-like sleeping surface. The Puffy mattress is an all foam mattress, but the company also manufactures two hybrids: Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal, both constructed with coils for a firmer feel.

Pros
  • Puffy mattresses are good options for anyone who loves the “hug” of memory foam.
  • Couples who are sensitive to movement will appreciate the mattresses’ motion isolating qualities.
Cons
  • Due to memory foam materials and how the mattress hugs the body, heat may get trapped, making it uncomfortable for those who sleep hot. However, the company does note that its mattresses include a cooling gel-infused foam designed to prevent this problem.
  • The biggest complaints on the company’s Better Business Bureau profile come from customers focused on customer service, notably delayed shipping times and complications with returns.

About Puffy

Founded in 2016 by Arthur Andreasya, Puffy is a direct-to-consumer brand. It currently offers three mattress options, in addition to bed frames, bedding, pillows and even a dog bed and a rug. All of its products are made in the U.S., constructed in small batches and compressed into a box within two weeks of purchase.

Per the company, Puffy attempts to use sleep research and sleep technologies to improve sleep quality, help minimize pain and improve blood circulation for its customers. The company uses a Cooling Cloud adaptive foam, which helps evenly distribute weight and dissipate heat. Its memory foams are CertiPUR-US certified and made without formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds or other harmful chemicals.

Puffy Mattress Options and Prices

The brand offers three mattress options.

The Puffy Mattress

The original Puffy is a 10-inch thick, all-foam mattress consisting of five layers: a grip base cover, firm and supportive memory foam, two foam layers for pressure relief and cooling and a stain resistant cover. It’s a medium-firm mattress and prices start at $1,224 for a twin and range up to $1,904 for a king. However, the brand regularly offers deep discounts of as much as half off the retail price and includes accessories with purchase.

The Puffy Lux Mattress

The Puffy Lux Mattress is a 12-inch, six-layered foam and coil hybrid mattress. It includes a grip base cover, supportive coils, both the polyurethane foam layers found in the original plus an extra, ultra-adaptive, contouring layer of polyurethane foam in between for extra support and pressure point relief and a stain resistant cover. This mattress comes in a medium-plush firmness and starts at $1,774 for a twin, with the price increasing to $2,454 for a king.

The Puffy Royal Mattress

The Puffy Royal Mattress is a 14-inch thick mattress with all six layers of the Puffy Lux, plus an added reflexive memory foam layer. It’s an ultra-plush mattress for those who prefer softer support, and prices start at $1,974 for a twin through $3,454 for a king.

Customization Options and Special Features

Puffy mattresses do not come with additional customization options. The mattresses are available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king sizes. Per the brand, twin, twin xl and full-size mattresses can hold up to 350 pounds, while queen, king and California king can hold 350 pounds per side.

Accessories

Each Puffy mattress order comes with a set of free cooling pillows, a mattress protector and a sheet set. They also sell a few mattress base options, including a metal foundation, an adjustable, remote controllable base that includes massage features and USB ports and an upholstered bed frame.

Warranties and Discounts

Every Puffy mattress is made in the U.S. and comes with a lifetime warranty and 101-night sleep trial. A minimum of 14 nights is required before customers can be issued a refund. Puffy also offers free delivery and returns.

What Sleep Experts Say

Mike Magnuson, founder of GoodBed.com, says Puffy mattresses offer exceptional motion isolation, excellent adjustable base compatibility and superior edge support compared to other foam mattress brands. However, he notes airflow is limited. “Coupled with deeper than average cushioning, this means that they [the mattresses] can be more inclined to trap heat closer to your body. This can be a particular concern for people that have a tendency to sleep hot,” he says.

In terms of who each mattress is better suited for, stomach sleepers will appreciate the Puffy Mattress, while the Puffy Lux is better constructed for side sleepers in terms of spinal alignment and pressure relief, he adds. Back sleepers will be served similarly well on either option.

Magnuson also says that all Puffy’s styles offer a deeper than average amount of cushioning,  designed for those who like to feel hugged or cradled by their mattress. He also notes the mattresses have little to no bounce.

What Users Say

Puffy Mattress has a cumulative 2.08 out of 5-star rating on the Better Business Bureau. However, it’s important to note that the majority of negative reviews focus around delayed arrival time, due to both transit and supply chain issues. There are also complaints about the company’s return policy, claiming it’s subpar with delayed refunds.

One user complained on the company’s BBB profile that at the time of ordering, they were not informed of any potential delays. ”I feel like that is something that the company should tell you before you drop almost 2K on a mattress,” they wrote. “The worst part is that they didn’t even contact me to let me know about the delay. I had to inquire myself and when I did I got a computer generated email back.”

However, another user who gave the company a 5-star rating maintained that the mattress was “delivered as expected” in March 2021. “Overall great experience. Highly recommended,” they wrote.

“I sleep much better with my Puffy Mattress. Use the Puffy Sheets as well. Can’t complain and happy with my purchase,” another customer wrote.

Who Should Purchase a Puffy Mattress?

Puffy mattresses are a great option for anyone who wants to melt into their mattress and feel like they’re sleeping on a cloud. Side sleepers and those with back pain will appreciate the ultra-soft mattresses more than back and stomach sleepers, who may need a firmer and more supportive sleeping surface.
